Their Eyes Were Watching God begins and
ends in Eatonville. Janie Crawford, a
middle aged black woman, has returned after having had adventures of her
own. There is gossip and stories upon
her return. Janie is cast as an
outsider, being very misunderstood.
Pheoby Watson approaches Janie with intentions of discovering the true
stories. Janie’s stories show how she
was made into the women she is now. Her
Grandmother, her mother figure, teaches Janie her ways and expects Janie to
live her life accordingly. Janie
attempts to live her grandmothers way, however, as expected it falls
through. Going through many relationships
Janie fails to find the love and life she is looking for. Finaly, She meets Tea Cake; he changes her
and helps her to see the joys of life.
Janie learns to see life in a different way than her Grandmother. The stories continue and Janie continues to
grow and change throughout them. Their Eyes Were Watching God displays a
moving story that shows a girl transforming onto a women, finding her own way
through the eyes of God.
